Training

We have been a training practice since 1992 and are engaged in and committed to the teaching of the General Practitioners, District Nurses and Health Visitors of the future. As a training practice we have to demonstrate and maintain the highest standards of clinical care for our patients as well as providing a valuable learning environment for the health professionals who train with us. External assessors visit us every four years to ensure that we meet the rigorous criteria necessary to maintain our training status.

In addition we teach Oxford medical students during their training attachment to the practice

What does the training of young GPs involve?
Each year, a doctor who is fully qualified but has selected general practice as their direction for higher specialisation, joins our team. They will already have completed their medical training at University, their ‘House Jobs’ and at least two additional years of hospital based training in specialties with a relevance to general practice. Our job, for the year that they are with us, is to help them hone their many skills into those specifically required for a career in independent general practice.

The entire team is involved in this process and it is co-ordinated by the trainer in the practice (Dr Douglas Boyle). Their time will be spent consulting with patients, in teaching sessions with the trainer or other members of the practice team, and on a day release course one day a week. The year climaxes in the ‘Summative Assessment’ examinations that qualify them to practice as an independent GP and, for some, the passing of the exam conferring Membership of the Royal College of GPs (MRCGP).

It is important for patients who may consult with our registrars that they understand the significant level of experience that they already have and that they are working under supervision. It is our duty, as a training practice, to guarantee the quality of care that you receive from any doctor at the surgery

The Value of Training Status
We see great value in this function of our practice.

For our patients:

bullet

External assessments ensure that high clinical standards are maintained.

bullet

Keeping up to date is even more important for training the registrar. Their presence contributes to this and to the stimulation of new ideas for development of the practice.

bullet

The presence of a registrar in training adds a young and recently trained doctor to our team increasing the availability of clinical staff to patients.

For the Registrars in training

bullet

Involvement in a cohesive team of primary health care workers committed to high quality patient care.

bullet

A team in which each member, whether clinical or administrative, has a part to play in training.

bullet

A practice in which the training of other health professionals (Health Visitors and District Nurses) is taking place. This brings rich opportunities for joint working and education.

bullet

A supportive educational environment to develop the knowledge and skills brought from their previous training posts.

bullet

An experienced and well-regarded training practice with a track record of success.

bullet

Two of our doctors are involved in research - this brings significant educational and clinical benefits to patients, practice and registrar.

For the Practice

bullet

The status of ‘Training Practice’ based on the high clinical, organisational and educational standards prescribed.

bullet

The presence each year of a young and stimulating doctor to help teach and update us.

bullet

New ideas and challenges from a fresh new mind each year.

bullet

An extra colleague to help us keep access optimal for our patients.

bullet

Exposing ourselves to external, rigorous assessment helps us to look critically at what we do here and gives a direction to our development.

For the Health Service

bullet

In receiving well-trained and motivated GPs to man the practices of the future.
